Did you watch 20/20 last night? If so, you know what orthorexia is, if not, you are probably stumped. I had never heard of it prior to last night's 20/20. It is an obsessive compulsive disorder focused on health food.
This was a timely episode for me, as I have been on an organic kick. I took a trip to Whole Foods this week and purchased some items. And at home I made homemade graham crackers and homemade nutra-grain bars (after reading the ingredients in graham crackers on the beach last week with Christy, I vowed to attempt to make home-made snacks for my family. . .I hate putting ingredients into our bodies that I have never heard of, especially Madeline's and Ryan's bodies). Yesterday at the grocery store, after looking at the ingredients in a loaf of bread and then looking at the price of organic bread, I decided that I would go home and make my own bread with my kitchen aid mixer. And then I saw the 20/20. Thank you 20/20 for stopping me before I developed orthorexia!!! I still might make the bread, but I'm not going to obsess over food.
You can check out 20/20's story at http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Stossel/story?id=5735592&page=1. It's fascinating.

aren't you glad you have friends like us to introduce you to totally unhealthy southern eating?? hahaha fried okra, boiled peanuts, pimento cheese sandwich, hushpuppies....
Okay, I think maybe there is such a disorder, but I also think that we should be really careful about what we eat! The food manufacturers don't care if we're healthy or not, they just want to make a buck. And there really are a lot of crappy additives put into our food. Homemade is best. I bet the food manufacturers also manufactured the disorder. Ha!

I still think you should continue to make homemade snacks for your children. There really is a lot of crap in processed foods. Food manufacturers don't care whether we are healthy are not. They're in it for the money and they will cut costs whenever they can by adding cheap, unhealthy additives. It's amazing what they've convinced us is okay to put in our mouths. I was just reading a label on my son's bottle of lemonade and it has wood rosin in it!! Gross!!
Wow, we are definately sister's, listen to the message I left for you today before reading this post. I'm on a HUGE health kick and trying to avoid all processed food for the boys and I, which is prompting me to bake bread and make crackers. Last year my kids bought lunch at school every single day this year I am stressing over sending them to school with a turkey sandwich on whole grain store bought bread. It must be genetic.
