Pet Insurance???

Well. . .we avoided the surgery, but an overnight stay at the vet, an IV, multiple xrays and special food all cost a pretty penny.  Elisa and Dana both strongly encouraged pet insurance when we asked them about it.  Anyone have a carrier that they love???

Sorry, we don't have any insurance tidbits here. Just wanted to say we're glad Bobo is doing better!

ask me about how much we spent on Daisy when she spent a week in an incubator sometime... :)c

Lauren, I am getting such a kick out of reading these posts, remembering that first night you had Bobo and all that talk about "you can only invest so much money in a pet." The Bobes is a full-fledged Wells, I'd say. Feel better, Bobester.

I had pet insurance when I had my sweet dog Molly and I would say it was a love / hate relationship with the insurance provider. On one hand, it did give me some piece of mind. In fact, I ended up opting for chemo treatment that I would have never done had it been 100% out of pocket.
The downside of course is that since almost all dogs go to the vet, and people who buy insurance are more likely to opt for treatment, they have to price the premiums pretty high. I used VPI (petinsurance.com) which was about $25 per month. (And got closer to $30 as she got older.)

The bottom line is that insurance can be expensive. Probably in the neighborhood of $5000 over the dogs life. However, if you have to make a life and death decision, it can save you some heart-ache.

And yes, they did pay what they said they would -- but be careful about exclusions and maximum payments for any particular diagnosis. (I got lucky with Molly in that her treatment covered two billing years, so I got to max it out twice in just a few months time.)

Let's chat if you need more info.
